Benefits of Being a Sea Cadet - Learn, Have Fun and Make Friends

Not only do cadets get to experience adventure and travel their peers can only imagine, they get a head start on joining the military or going to college. Depending on the rank they earn in the Sea Cadets, they can enter the military at an advanced paygrade. The Sea Cadets also offers college scholarship funds to qualifying cadets.

Membership Benefits

Cadets have the privilege of wearing the U.S. Navy uniform with appropriate Sea Cadet insignia. Cadets have absolutely no commitment regarding future military service, but cadets who do decide to enlist may be eligible to enter at an advanced paygrade.

Our Training Opportunities

During school vacations, cadets have the opportunity to participate in training events around the country. We offer programs in areas such as aviation, field and medical training, leadership development, military police science, scuba diving, seamanship, photojournalism and sailing. Cadets train aboard U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships and can meet Sea Cadets from around the world on our International Exchange Program.

Advancement

Promotions within the Sea Cadets are based upon merit. Cadet recruits enter as E-1's, and upon successful completion of boot camp and other academic requirements may be advanced to the apprentice rates E-2. As cadets receive additional training, they may advance through the rate structure, eventually attaining the rate of Chief Petty Officer (E-7).

Sea Cadets complete official U.S. Navy correspondence courses for each rank, advancing in rate every 6 months (if they keep up with their coursework).

League Cadets complete NLCC lessons in the NLCC Syllabus for each rank, advancing in rate every 4 months (if they keep up with their coursework). While there are advanced training opportunities for League Cadets, they are not required for advancement.

Travel Opportunities

The Naval Sea Cadet Corps also participates in an International Sea Cadet Exchange Program with several countries including Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium, Japan, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, and other countries in Europe and Asia. Each summer selected cadets have the opportunity to meet and train with their foreign counterparts.

Parental Support

Parents need to keep in mind that if their son or daughter decides to join either the NSCC or NLCC, they will play an important role in assuring their child’s success as a cadet.  The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a non-profit, volunteer organization that relies heavily on parents to support the efforts of volunteer officers and instructors working with their children.  With this in mind, parents should:

  • Encourage their child to be respectful of officers and adult volunteers.
  • Praise their child for his or her accomplishments.
  • Remind their child to listen to and obey instructions.
  • Be punctual in dropping off and picking up their child from USNSCC functions.

Parents who are interested in volunteering with unit activities and responsibilities are encouraged to read the section on Volunteer Opportunities.
