James M. Hannan DivisionThe James M. Hannan Division of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corp is over 50 years old and is the oldest continuously serving sea cadet unit in the state of Michigan. We are part of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) www.seacadets.org/ and is for American youth ages 10-18 who have a desire to learn about the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Sea Cadets are authorized by the Secretary of the Navy to wear Navy uniforms appropriately marked with the Sea Cadet Corps insignia. The objectives of the Sea Cadet program are to introduce youth to naval life, to develop in them a sense of pride, patriotism, courage, and self-reliance, and to maintain an environment free of drugs and gangs. Cadets ages 10-13 are considered "Leaguers or League Cadets" and participate in Navy League Orientation trainings. Cadets ages 13-17 are considered Sea Cadets and participate in Recruit Training ("boot camp") and other "Advanced Training Opportunities".
Our cadets meet or "drill" two weekends per month (usually the 2nd and 4th Saturdays 8:15 to 4 pm with possibly the exception of July) at Cambridge Alternative High School in Garden City, Mi. (see the Contact Us page for exact location and map). Please see our calendar for up-to-date event information. Additional events are also planned. Blessing of the Fleet at Mariners Church in Detroit, Detroit Boat Races, various Color Guard events, Outings such as the Blue Angels, Tiger games, Bowling, Fundraisers. Our cadets are instructed by both Sea Cadet Officers, active duty military and senior cadets through classroom and applied instruction in subjects such as naval history and customs, naval terminology, decision making, personal responsibility, basic seamanship, military drill, physical fitness and leadership. The cadets have to complete basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois before they can take the advance training . Once Recruit Training or Navy League Orientation is completed, cadets have a world of Advanced Training Opportunities offered world-wide for one- to three-weeks. Advanced Training Opportunities such as Seamanship Training on an actual Navy Vessel, Culinary Training, Master-at-Arms Training, Fireman Training, Medical Training, Vehicle Mechanics, Leadership Training, Photography and many more opportunities that are available in Michigan and most of the 50 United States along with International Training opportunities in 17 countries such as Hong Kong, Australia and Russia to name a few. Does joining the Sea Cadets mean you have to join any branch of the United States Military? The answer is, NO. Please visit the How to Join page and the About page to find out more about the United States Navy Sea Cadet program, its history and answers to many Frequently Asked Questions. |

April 28 · A few days ago I reached out for volunteers to help prepare the memorial for 20 headstone pads. I want to "Thank" all those who came to help Saturday, April 27th. Also the Sea Cadets from Garden City and the Canton Police Explorers. With all these young guys and gals we were able to complete the mission in 2 hours. WOW to be young again.
